Flare co-founder Hugo Philion discusses how the new Smart Accounts feature allows XRP holders to participate in DeFi without buying native tokens, boosting FXRP supply by 31% to 133 million in 10 days. He also outlines the Flare 2.0 upgrade with a privacy computing layer to accelerate real-world asset tokenization.

In a recent podcast interview, Hugo Philion, co-founder of Flare and CEO of Flare Labs, provided an in-depth look at how this EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain is building an end-to-end decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem around XRP. Philion emphasized that despite XRP's massive market capitalization, its on-chain utility remains largely untapped. Flare's mission is to leverage its built-in data protocols and cross-chain capabilities to allow XRP holders to directly engage in lending, borrowing, trading on decentralized exchanges (DEX), minting decentralized stablecoins, and executing collateralized option strategies.

Smart Accounts: The Key to Lowering Barriers

To eliminate friction for everyday users, Flare recently launched Flare Smart Accounts. This account abstraction technology enables users to control Flare transactions—such as minting FXRP or depositing into vaults—directly from the XRP Ledger, without needing to purchase Flare's native token or download a new wallet. The mechanism has dramatically reduced entry barriers. Within just 10 days of launch, the supply of FXRP, Flare's bridged version of XRP, surged by 31% to approximately 133 million tokens. Philion noted that retail accessibility is crucial for initial adoption, but the larger opportunity lies in catering to institutional players.

Institutional Focus as the Next Phase

Philion pointed out that roughly 60% to 70% of all XRP is still sitting on exchanges, representing a massive pool of underutilized value. Flare is developing institutional-grade products to unlock this liquidity. He stated unequivocally: “All traditional real-world assets (RWA)—including equities, bonds, and derivatives—will inevitably migrate to the blockchain.” Currently, Flare is prioritizing maximizing XRP's liquidity and use cases, and will later extend similar functionality to other major tokens like Bitcoin.

Flare 2.0: Privacy Compute Layer to Pave the Way for RWA

One of the core obstacles to institutional adoption of RWA is privacy. To address this, Flare is preparing the Flare 2.0 upgrade, which introduces a novel compute layer. This layer allows applications to run off-chain with full privacy while settling securely on-chain. Philion believes this flexible and powerful privacy-preserving compute layer positions Flare as the central hub for RWA, enabling complex applications—such as DEXs and lending protocols—for assets issued on Flare or connected chains like the XRP Ledger.

With the Smart Accounts feature already validating user demand for frictionless DeFi, the upcoming 2.0 upgrade is set to secure Flare's crucial role in the real-world asset tokenization wave. “Superior decentralized technology will eventually replace the intermediary-heavy traditional financial system—it is an inevitable evolution,” Philion concluded.
