Hugo Philion discusses Flare's mission to build a DeFi ecosystem around XRP, highlighting the success of Flare Smart Accounts which drove FXRP to grow 31% in 10 days. He outlines Flare 2.0's privacy layer for real-world asset tokenization.

Hugo Philion, co-founder of Flare and CEO of Flare Labs, recently shared an in-depth vision for the Flare blockchain: building an end-to-end decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem centered on XRP, and eventually migrating all traditional real-world assets (RWA) on-chain. With a background in finance and machine learning, Philion believes that superior technologies like DeFi will inevitably replace the intermediary-heavy legacy financial system.

Flare Smart Accounts Ignite XRP DeFi Adoption

Flare is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain with an embedded data protocol that allows users to directly use XRP for lending, borrowing, trading on decentralized exchanges (DEXs), creating decentralized stablecoins, and opening collateralized options strategies. However, previously XRP holders needed to acquire Flare's native token or download a new wallet to participate. To solve this, Flare launched Flare Smart Accounts—a revolutionary account abstraction technology. Users can now control Flare transactions, such as minting FXRP and depositing into vaults, directly from the XRP Ledger without needing FLR or a new wallet.

The impact was immediate: within just 10 days of launch, the supply of FXRP—Flare's bridged version of XRP—surged 31% to approximately 133 million. "We've removed the friction for millions of XRP holders to access DeFi," Philion said.

Institutional Market: The Key to Unlocking 60-70% of XRP

While retail adoption is encouraging, Philion stressed that institutional-grade products are critical for market expansion. He noted that about 60-70% of XRP is stored on exchanges, representing vast untapped liquidity. Flare is actively developing institutional solutions such as custody, compliant lending, and structured products to unlock these assets.

RWA Tokenization: Privacy as the Bottleneck, Flare 2.0 as the Answer

Looking ahead, Philion asserted that the blockchain migration of all traditional real-world assets—including stocks, bonds, and derivatives—is "inevitable." Flare's near-term strategy is to maximize XRP's utility and liquidity, then gradually integrate other major tokens like Bitcoin into its DeFi ecosystem.

The key barrier to institutional adoption of off-chain RWAs is privacy. Transactions and complex applications require confidentiality. To address this, Flare is preparing the highly anticipated Flare 2.0 upgrade, which will introduce a new compute layer. This layer allows applications to run off-chain with complete privacy while settling securely on-chain. "This powerful privacy-preserving compute layer will position Flare as the central hub for RWAs, enabling sophisticated applications like DEXs and lending protocols for assets issued on Flare or connected chains," Philion explained.

Philion concluded that Flare's ultimate goal is to build a self-sustaining, all-encompassing decentralized financial system—with XRP as the starting point.
