Flare: A DeFi Layer1 Built for XRP

Hugo Philion, co-founder of Flare and CEO of Flare Labs, recently shared the project’s vision in a podcast interview. Flare is an EVM-compatible Layer1 blockchain uniquely designed to unlock the potential of XRP, the massive yet underutilized digital asset. With a background in finance and machine learning, Philion believes decentralized finance represents an inevitable technological upgrade that will eventually replace the heavily intermediated traditional financial system.

Smart Accounts Remove Friction, FXRP Jumps 31% in 10 Days

Flare recently launched its groundbreaking Flare Smart Accounts, an account abstraction that eliminates the need for retail users to acquire the native FLR token or download a new wallet. XRP holders can now control Flare transactions—such as minting FXRP (the bridged version of XRP on Flare) and depositing into vaults—directly from the XRP Ledger. This intuitive mechanism drove rapid adoption: FXRP supply surged 31% within just 10 days of the Smart Accounts launch, reaching approximately 133 million units.

Philion emphasized that while retail accessibility is critical, the larger opportunity lies in institutional products. An estimated 60-70% of XRP remains on exchanges, representing a vast pool of liquidity waiting to be deployed into DeFi. Smart Accounts lower the barrier not only for individuals but also for institutions seeking a compliant on-ramp.

Flare 2.0: A Privacy Layer for Institutional RWA

Bringing real-world assets (RWA) on-chain is Flare’s long-term goal, but institutional adoption requires privacy—complex trading and applications cannot operate on a fully transparent ledger. To address this, Flare is preparing its highly anticipated Flare 2.0 upgrade, which introduces a new computation layer. This layer allows applications to run off-chain with full privacy while settling securely on-chain. The flexible, privacy-preserving computation will position Flare as a vital hub for RWA, enabling sophisticated DEXes, lending protocols, and other applications for assets issued on Flare or connected chains like the XRP Ledger.

The Inevitable Migration of All Real-World Assets

Philion firmly believes that the migration of all traditional real-world assets—including stocks, bonds, and derivatives—onto blockchains is inevitable. Flare’s immediate priority is to maximize XRP’s utility and liquidity, which will then serve as the engine to integrate other major tokens like Bitcoin into its DeFi ecosystem. By pairing XRP with a diverse array of on-chain RWA, Flare aims to create a truly decentralized, inclusive, and efficient global financial system. “Technological progress never reverses,” Philion concluded. “DeFi will ultimately reshape the face of finance.”
