Fold debuts its first enterprise rewards program
Fold Holdings, Inc. has launched a Bitcoin bonus program for employees, marking the first rollout from its new enterprise arm, Fold Business. Effective March 1, the program allows more than 10,000 hourly workers at Steak 'n Shake to earn Bitcoin-based rewards. The bonus is set at $0.21 per hour, with payouts scheduled to be distributed over two years.
According to Fold, the offering is designed to meet employer demand for a simple rewards mechanism that does not require businesses to build or manage their own crypto infrastructure. Instead of handling technical complexity directly, companies can use Fold’s employer-focused system to deliver Bitcoin incentives in a more operationally straightforward way.
Targeting frontline hiring and retention challenges
The company is positioning the product for frontline-heavy sectors such as food service and manufacturing, where retention and hiring remain persistent issues. Fold’s thesis is that Bitcoin-denominated bonuses can serve as a differentiated incentive for workers, potentially helping employers improve recruiting appeal and long-term engagement.
The model is already being used beyond Steak 'n Shake. Fold said Simple Mining has also adopted the platform, investing 1% of each employee’s salary into Bitcoin, which can be redeemed at year-end. That suggests Fold’s enterprise strategy may support multiple compensation-linked structures, not just fixed hourly reward programs.
Expansion plans and market reaction
Looking ahead, Fold plans to expand the platform with payroll management features and additional enterprise financial tools, broadening its role in employer-facing financial services. Even so, the stock market reaction was negative on the day of the announcement. Fold shares, trading under FLD, fell more than 7% to $1.41, despite gaining roughly 22% over the previous week.
Overall, the launch shows Fold pushing Bitcoin beyond retail rewards and consumer engagement into the workplace benefits category. If more companies adopt similar structures, crypto-based employee incentives could become a more practical and visible enterprise use case.
