Bitcoin Gift Card Launches, Targeting Traditional Retail Channels

Fold has announced the launch of its Bitcoin Gift Card, pioneering the integration of Bitcoin into the $300 billion U.S. retail gift card market. Currently available on Fold's website, the product will expand to major retailers nationwide throughout 2025. Consumers can purchase Bitcoin through familiar retail channels, using it for personal savings or as a gift.

“Once you buy that gift card, you can give it to someone or use it yourself. You open the Fold app, and your bitcoin appears,” said Will Reeves, Chairman and CEO of Fold, in an interview with Bitcoin Magazine. The card features a white Bitcoin 'B' adorned with vibrant orange, inspired by Costco's success selling $200 million in gold bars monthly.

Distribution Network Covers Over 150,000 Points of Sale

Fold has partnered with Totus, a gift card issuance provider, to distribute the card through more than 150,000 points of sale nationwide. While specific retailers have not been named, Fold plans to announce distribution partners throughout 2025, including some of the largest U.S. retailers. “Throughout the rest of this year, we’ll announce distribution partners, including some of the largest retailers in the US,” Reeves added. Consumers will be able to buy Bitcoin gift cards at grocery chains, gas stations, and other everyday shopping locations.

Lowering the Entry Barrier for Newcomers, Driving Bitcoin Adoption

The Bitcoin Gift Card targets millions of Americans curious about Bitcoin but hesitant to navigate apps or exchanges. By leveraging trusted retail channels, Fold opens a new avenue for Bitcoin adoption. Since 2019, Fold has empowered over 600,000 users with Bitcoin-based financial tools and holds over 1,485 Bitcoin in its treasury.

“This gift card gives us distribution directly to millions of Americans who may not be buying Bitcoin because they haven’t downloaded a new app, don’t have a brokerage account, or haven’t seen the ETF,” Reeves explained. He predicted: “I think there’s a real chance by the end of 2025 that Bitcoin becomes the most popular gift in America because of this card.”

Fold will continue to announce distribution partners throughout 2025, gradually achieving full penetration in retail scenarios. This move is expected to further mainstream Bitcoin adoption, bringing digital gold into everyday shopping carts.
