The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced Monday that the 2022 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel has been awarded to former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, University of Chicago professor Douglas Diamond, and Washington University professor Philip Dybvig for their research on banks and financial crises. The committee stated that the laureates have “significantly improved our understanding of the role of banks in the economy, particularly during financial crises,” noting that avoiding bank collapses is vital.

Bernanke's Research on the Great Depression

Bernanke, currently a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, analyzed the Great Depression of the 1930s and demonstrated how bank runs intensified and prolonged the crisis. Diamond and Dybvig provided theoretical frameworks for why bank stability matters. Their combined work has shaped modern financial regulation and crisis management policies.

Critics Blame Bernanke for Debt Bubbles

The award triggered widespread backlash on social media. "The Big Short" investor Michael Burry tweeted: “Bernanke gets the Nobel Prize in Economics. Not a joke.” Goldmoney research head Alasdair Macleod said the committee had “lost all credibility.” Gold bug Peter Schiff wrote: “How fitting that Ben Bernanke would win a Nobel Prize in Economics for his research on the financial crisis that he helped Greenspan create. Ironically, the bigger financial crisis that awaits is mostly on him.”

Former Citigroup banker and Lionsgate founder Frank Giustra commented: “I am speechless. A Nobel prize to the individual who promised us in 2009 that Fed monetary policy would revert to its normal self — instead, we got a historic bubble & inequality.” VanEck advisor Gabor Gurbacs noted: “Bernanke got us to the brink of collapse and under a mountain of debt with quantitative easing. It’s all a scam.”

While Bernanke's academic contributions are recognized, his implementation of trillions of dollars in quantitative easing during and after the 2008 financial crisis remains highly controversial. Many in the cryptocurrency space view Bitcoin as a hedge against such central bank policies. What do you think about Bernanke's Nobel win? Let us know in the comments.
