A Los Angeles County jury has found former Los Angeles Police Department officer Eric Halem guilty in a violent case involving kidnapping and the theft of bitcoin private keys. The prosecution said the crime took place during a 2024 home invasion targeting a teenage cryptocurrency holder, making the case an example of how digital asset crime can move from the internet into the physical world. Rather than hacking an exchange or compromising a wallet remotely, the alleged attackers focused on the person who controlled the keys.
Halem, 38, had served 13 years with the LAPD and left the department in 2022. At the time of the robbery, he was working as a reserve officer. According to trial evidence, he and three alleged accomplices posed as police officers in order to gain access to a high-rise apartment in Koreatown, where a 17-year-old bitcoin holder lived. The victim testified under his first name, Daniel, and described being threatened and restrained until he surrendered a hard drive that held the private keys to about $350,000 in bitcoin.
How the alleged robbery unfolded inside the Koreatown apartment
Prosecutors told jurors that the group gained entry by presenting themselves as law enforcement. They wore vests identifying themselves as police and used an access code that had allegedly been obtained from a conspirator who had rented the apartment unit to the teenager. According to testimony cited by The Los Angeles Times, the suspects took the elevator to the 18th floor and entered the apartment in the early morning hours of Dec. 28, 2024.
Once inside, Daniel and his girlfriend were quickly overpowered. Daniel’s girlfriend was placed in LAPD-issued handcuffs, while Daniel himself was subdued, cuffed, and then confronted with demands for the hard drive containing the bitcoin. Prosecutors said the teenager complied only because he was threatened with being shot if he refused. The central target of the raid was not cash, jewelry, or electronics in the ordinary sense, but the storage device that controlled access to the victim’s cryptocurrency.
This is what makes the case especially relevant for the crypto community. In many situations, ownership of bitcoin is effectively controlled by whoever has the private keys. If those keys are stored on a hard drive, hardware wallet, or another offline medium, then the asset can become vulnerable to physical coercion. Jurors deliberated for less than one day before returning guilty verdicts on kidnapping and robbery charges. Halem is scheduled to be sentenced on March 31, and prosecutors have said the charges carry the possibility of a life sentence. In closing arguments, Deputy District Attorney Jane Brownstone framed the case as more than a robbery. She argued that Halem had violated the oath he took as a police officer by using the appearance and authority of law enforcement as part of the crime. According to the prosecution, posing as police was a strategic tool: it made entry easier, reduced suspicion, and gave the suspects immediate psychological control over the people inside the apartment.
Brownstone also pointed jurors to text messages sent after the robbery. In one message, Halem allegedly wrote that he was monitoring police radio traffic. After two alleged accomplices were arrested, he wrote another message indicating that he knew they were “talking,” and added that “Someone I know fed wise called me,” according to evidence shown in court. Prosecutors used these messages to suggest knowledge of the investigation and awareness of the risks posed by other people involved in the case.
From the prosecution’s perspective, the crime appeared targeted rather than spontaneous. The location was known in advance, building access information had been obtained, and the attackers allegedly came specifically for a device that stored the keys to bitcoin worth roughly $350,000. This kind of case is often treated as a “wrench attack” or coercive key theft in the broader crypto security conversation: the blockchain itself is not breached, but the holder is physically forced to surrender access.
The defense strategy: challenge the evidence and the logic of the investigation
Halem’s attorney, Megan Maitia, pushed back against the prosecution’s case by attacking the quality of the investigation. She argued that detectives relied on selected text messages taken from a much larger pool of data and failed to properly corroborate Daniel’s version of events. In that approach, the defense was not necessarily required to prove an alternative story; instead, it sought to convince jurors that the state’s narrative was incomplete or insufficiently verified.
During testimony, Daniel admitted that he had acquired his bitcoin holdings through fraud. Even so, that admission did not cancel out the robbery charge. In criminal law, the fact that property may have an unlawful origin does not authorize another party to use force, kidnapping, threats, or unlawful entry to seize it. That detail made the case more complicated, but it did not remove the prosecution’s burden to prove the robbery itself.
Maitia also challenged the idea that the suspects were sophisticated organized criminals. Trial testimony showed that the group drove to the scene in a green Range Rover and an orange Lamborghini Urus, both registered to Halem’s luxury car rental business, DriveLA, and both equipped with GPS trackers. Her argument was straightforward: if Halem had carefully planned the robbery, why would he use vehicles that could be traced directly back to him?
Halem did not testify in his own defense, and the defense called no witnesses. That is a legally permissible strategy, but in practice it meant the case turned heavily on whether the jury trusted the prosecution’s documentary evidence, the victim’s testimony, and the broader pattern suggested by the communications and movements tied to the suspects. In the end, the jury was persuaded enough to convict in under a day of deliberation.
Background on Halem and the still-pending co-defendants
Evidence introduced at trial also gave jurors a broader picture of Halem’s life outside the police department. In addition to his former LAPD role, he operated the luxury car rental business DriveLA. Trial reporting also noted that he had pursued other ventures, including an app designed to let actors audition remotely and conversations surrounding a reality television project. These details were not the core of the robbery case, but they helped establish his business activities and personal profile after leaving full-time police service.
His co-defendants have not yet stood trial, so the full legal picture remains incomplete. One of them, Gabby Ben, 51, reportedly has prior fraud convictions. All of the co-defendants have maintained their innocence. As those cases move forward, more information may emerge about planning, access to the apartment, division of roles, and what happened to the stolen device and the bitcoin it controlled.
Even based on the currently reported facts, the structure of the alleged crime appears deliberate: identify a crypto holder, obtain location and building access information, enter under false authority, restrain the occupants, and seize the storage device that controlled the funds. That sequence reflects a different class of crypto crime from phishing, malware, smart contract exploits, or exchange breaches. It is a direct assault on key ownership through intimidation and force.

The broader lesson from this case is that crypto security does not stop at seed phrase backups, hardware wallets, or strong passwords.
