In Fantasy Premier League, the three players with the highest Bonus Points System scores in each match get 3, 2 and 1 bonus points. Those BPS scores are created from Opta match statistics, and the bonus points shown during and after a match can still change before the Gameweek is marked final.
How bonus points are awarded
Bonus points sit on top of a player's normal FPL score, adding 1 to 3 extra points for a single match. Goals, assists, clean sheets and other actions still matter, but bonus points are decided by each player's BPS total in that match.
Only the top three BPS performers in a match receive bonus points. The system is data-led rather than subjective, so both positive and negative match actions feed into the final order.
Tie rules
- If two players tie for first place, both get 3 points and the next player gets 1.
- If two players tie for second place, the first player gets 3 and both tied players get 2.
- If two players tie for third place, the first gets 3, the second gets 2 and both tied players get 1.

BPS is a net score, so strong attacking or defensive contributions can be pulled down by cards, fouls, missed chances or errors. That is also why post-match review matters: once Opta reviews event data, a player's BPS total and bonus position can still move up or down before the Gameweek locks.
BPS changes for 2026/27
The 2026/27 adjustments were made to limit players collecting both defensive contribution points and bonus points in the same match, while also giving more weight to goalkeepers, full-backs and attacking players.
Here are the official changes.
| Action | 2025/26 | 2026/27 |
|---|---|---|
| Being tackled | -1 | Removed |
| Clearances, blocks and interceptions | 1 per 2 | 1 per 3 |
| Save from a shot inside the box | 3 | 2 for the save plus 1 |
| Save from a shot outside the box | 2 | 2, as for any save |
| Save from a big chance | Not counted | 1 extra |
| Penalty save | 8 | 7 |
The goalkeeper section changed the most. The new setup splits save-related actions more clearly, adds extra credit for stopping a big chance, and rewrites how penalty saves are treated because a penalty itself counts as a big chance.
Another key change is the removal of the deduction for being tackled, along with a lower accumulation rate for clearance, block and interception work.
FAQ
When are bonus points added in FPL?
BPS updates during a match, and projected bonus points are added to player scores after 20 minutes of each match. Those numbers are still provisional at that stage.
They can keep changing after full-time because post-match review data still feeds back into BPS.
Why did my player's bonus points change after the match?
BPS statistics continue to update during the post-match review. A player can rise or fall in the BPS rankings, and that can change the bonus points attached to the match.
Once the Gameweek's points are marked final, BPS data is no longer changed.
When do Gameweek points become final?
Gameweek points can change until 09:00 UK time on the day after the final match of that Gameweek. After that, no further adjustments are made except in extraordinary circumstances.
Before 2026/27, the lock came one hour after the final whistle of the Gameweek's last match. The later deadline gives post-match Opta review data more time to reach both the Bonus Points System and defensive contribution points.
What are bonus points in Fantasy Premier League?
They are extra FPL points awarded for the best BPS performances in a single match. The top player gets 3, the second gets 2 and the third gets 1.
They are separate from the standard points for goals, assists and other actions, but they are added to the same match total in FPL.
