Last August, a former ByteDance employee bought two Seagate large-capacity HDDs on Pinduoduo to store tick-level market data for a quantitative platform. After receiving them, he noticed the same product kept rising in price over several days, moving unidirectionally upward. From Price Signal to AI Storage Demand
Further investigation traced the root cause to explosive AI data center demand for storage. Large model training and inference generate massive data requiring long-term, low-cost preservation, and large-capacity HDDs (nearline enterprise drives) are the primary medium. Major cloud providers like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google were bulk purchasing. Seagate's HAMR technology, which significantly increases per-drive capacity, perfectly matched data center needs, leading to prioritized enterprise orders and squeezed retail supply. Seagate’s quarterly earnings at the time showed 39% year-over-year revenue growth and record gross margins, with the storage sector being repriced as part of the AI supply chain.
13F Data Validated Institutional Consensus
Personal conviction needed institutional validation. Using 13F filings (quarterly institutional holdings disclosures), the employee tracked Seagate's institutional position changes over the past year: in the second half of 2024, only about 800 institutions held the stock; by Q2 2025, the number began to inflect; and in Q3, it accelerated to over 1,200, with the count of new entrants increasing each quarter. Breadth indicators suggested a broad-based institutional influx rather than a few funds’ gamble. After initially buying 500 shares at around $150, he gradually added positions and also used LEAPS CALLs on STX and SNDK. Eventually, Seagate's stock surged to $965, a gain of over 6x, briefly becoming the top performer in the S&P 500 for the year.
