According to local reports, former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) is in “good spirits” and being kept in the maximum security unit within the sick bay of the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services (BDCS). The prison, known as Fox Hill, has a notorious reputation for being filthy and overcrowded, and was accused of prison maltreatment last year. Acting Commissioner of The Bahamas Corrections, Doan Cleare, detailed that SBF is in a dorm-style cell with roughly five other inmates.
Fox Hill: A Prison Known for Filth and Infestation
After living in luxury at Albany Place in Nassau, Bahamas, the FTX co-founder now resides in the maximum security unit of Fox Hill prison. The facility has been described by the New York Post as a “maggot-infested hellhole.” SBF’s family members have reportedly been attempting to get the former FTX executive vegan meals, reflecting concerns about the prison’s food standards.
Journalist Tiffany Fong shared on Twitter that the U.S. State Department flagged Fox Hill prison for being “infested with rats, maggots, and insects,” where “inmates removed human waste by bucket” and “developed bed sores from lying on the bare ground.” Other reports indicate Fox Hill is understaffed and some inmates are allowed outside for only 30 minutes a week.
Commissioner Provides Update: Medication on Time, Lawyer Visits Only
Acting Commissioner Cleare told The Nassau Guardian that SBF is being held in the Fox Hill medical department. After spending his first night in jail, SBF was in “good spirits.” “Mr. Fried is housed in [the] Maximum Security Housing Unit in [the] sick bay,” Cleare said. “He is getting his medication on time. Only in-person lawyer visits [are permitted] at this time, along with personnel from the American Embassy. All others will be via video conferencing. He is with five other inmates in a dorm-style setting.”
SBF will remain in custody at Fox Hill until February 8, 2023, unless he is extradited to the United States first. U.S. authorities have already filed a formal extradition request, and a Bahamian court has approved it, though SBF’s legal team is attempting to delay the process.
From Crypto King to Prisoner: The Fall of Sam Bankman-Fried
Sam Bankman-Fried was once hailed as the golden boy of cryptocurrency, with his FTX exchange valued at $32 billion at its peak. However, in November 2022, FTX filed for bankruptcy amid a liquidity crisis, triggering revelations of massive fund misappropriation from customer accounts. SBF was arrested in the Bahamas on December 12, 2022, and faces charges including fraud, money laundering, and campaign finance violations. If convicted, he could face up to 115 years in prison.
While awaiting extradition, SBF’s conditions at Fox Hill remain a topic of intense public interest. Human rights groups have expressed concern about the prison’s conditions, but officials insist SBF is receiving appropriate medical care and is in good spirits.
