Nearly three years after its dramatic collapse, the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX has announced a concrete date to begin repaying certain creditors. According to a February 7, 2025 announcement, FTX will initiate its first round of distributions to Convenience Class creditors on February 18, 2025, with funds expected to arrive within one to three business days. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the asset recovery and distribution process that began in November 2022 when FTX filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Repayment Structure and Partners
FTX has transferred funds to two designated distribution partners — BitGo and Kraken — which will handle payouts to retail and institutional clients as well as creditors in supported jurisdictions. Only claimants who have fulfilled pre-payout requirements are eligible for this distribution, including completing Know-Your-Customer (KYC) checks, submitting tax documentation, and onboarding with either BitGo or Kraken through the FTX customer portal. Transferred claims require a 21-day notice period and official registration updates.
The restructuring plan, approved under Chapter 11, is administered by the FTX Recovery Trust, which coordinates asset recovery efforts. John J. Ray III, the administrator of the FTX Recovery Trust, called the payout a “milestone” after 28 months of asset recovery work. The trust continues to pursue outstanding funds while overseeing the phased repayment process.
Creditors who fail to complete KYC and tax documentation in time may miss the first distribution but could still participate in later rounds. FTX notes that recipients must contact BitGo or Kraken directly for account-specific inquiries once distributions begin. Any unclaimed funds remain the responsibility of the account holder after transfer.
Broader Implications and Market Impact
FTX filed for bankruptcy in November 2022, owing approximately $8 billion to customers. After years of litigation and asset recovery, the court approved a repayment plan based on asset values as of November 2022 — a valuation that has drawn criticism from creditors due to the subsequent surge in cryptocurrency prices. The payout, while modest relative to current market values, is seen as a critical precedent for how crypto bankruptcy cases are handled.
The choice of BitGo and Kraken as distribution partners is notable: both are regulated entities with strong compliance records. BitGo is a qualified custodian with multiple state licenses, and Kraken is a well-known exchange with a history of regulatory engagement. This selection may help bolster confidence in the repayment process.
The case continues under the supervision of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. FTX has stated that further details about eligibility and procedures are available on its support portal.
