Funko Inc. (Nasdaq: FNKO), a publicly traded pop-culture consumer products company, has announced it will launch a non-fungible token (NFT) collection featuring Jay and Silent Bob, the iconic characters from Kevin Smith's Clerks films, via the digital collectibles platform Droppp on July 26, 2022. This initiative comes three months after Funko acquired a majority stake in NFT startup Tokenwave, with CEO Brian Mariotti describing Funko Pop digital NFTs as a potential 'game-changer.'

Jay and Silent Bob NFT Collection Details

Titled 'Jay and Silent Bob x Funko Series 1 Digital Pop!,' the collection will be available exclusively on Droppp. Each digital Pop! NFT will be redeemable for a corresponding physical Funko Pop vinyl figure, offering collectors both a digital asset and a tangible collectible. Jay and Silent Bob are central characters in Kevin Smith's Askewniverse, appearing in Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and other films. Funko tweeted: 'Jay and Silent Bob x Funko Series 1 Digital Pop! coming soon to Droppp.' The NFTs are minted on the Wax blockchain, building on previous Funko Digital Pop! partnerships with DC Comics and Warner Bros.

Funko's Web3 Strategy and Market Context

Funko's foray into NFTs aligns with a broader trend of major brands entering the digital collectible space, including Topps, Adidas, McDonald's, Nike, Coca-Cola, and Marvel. Despite this, NFT sales have dropped 49% in July compared to the previous 30 days, according to CryptoSlam.io data from July 15. Nevertheless, Funko is pushing ahead, also planning an immersive fan experience at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) from July 21-24. The company's strategy leverages beloved IP and physical-digital hybrids to attract collectors amid a cooling market.
