Futu Holdings, known for its popular "Futu Niuniu" trading app, announced that its virtual asset trading platform PantherTrade has obtained a full license from Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) and will undergo deep integration with Futu Securities. This makes Futu the first financial institution in Asia to hold both a securities brokerage license and a virtual asset trading platform (VATP) license, closing the compliance loop.

Asia's First Dual License: A Milestone for Brokerage-Affiliated VATP

Under Hong Kong's current regulatory regime, VATP licenses are strictly vetted by the SFC. PantherTrade's approval signals that Futu's dual-track strategy—covering both traditional finance and the crypto market—has gained official endorsement. Once the integration is live, users will be able to access regulated brokerage services and compliant crypto trading under one group, eliminating the need to shuffle funds across platforms.

Crypto Holdings as Buying Power: A New Margin Channel

The company further revealed plans to incorporate virtual asset holdings into a unified purchasing power calculation system. In simple terms, users may soon use their crypto assets as collateral for margin or leveraged trading in traditional securities such as Hong Kong stocks and US stocks. This mechanism, if realized, will break down the capital barrier between crypto and traditional markets, enabling seamless cross-asset movement.

Positioning in Hong Kong's VATP Compliance Window

Futu's move comes amid Hong Kong's mandatory VATP licensing regime that started in 2023 and tighter compliance rules for retail crypto trading. While many exchanges are still awaiting approval or remediating compliance gaps, PantherTrade has already secured its license, seizing the strategic window.
