Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by the Winklevoss twins, announced on August 14, 2025, the launch of the Gemini Wallet, a self-custody smart wallet designed to streamline onchain interactions for both everyday crypto users and developers. Alongside the wallet, the company introduced the Gemini Onchain Dashboard, a browser-based hub that allows users to view their holdings, explore decentralized applications (DApps), and earn yields through curated DeFi vaults.
Passkey Technology Eliminates Seed Phrases
Unlike traditional self-custody wallets that require users to download separate applications or manage complex seed phrases, the Gemini Wallet leverages passkey technology for seamless onboarding. Users can log in with a single tap across mobile and desktop platforms, eliminating the friction of manual backups. The wallet supports both embedded (within Gemini's ecosystem) and portable (independent) use cases, offering flexibility without sacrificing security.
Gas-Free Transactions Through Layer 2 Partnerships
To reduce transaction costs and lower the barrier to entry, Gemini has partnered with leading Layer 2 networks including Arbitrum, Polygon, Optimism, and Base to sponsor gas fees during the initial rollout. Early adopters also receive a free ENS subdomain and gain access to onchain tools via the transparent dashboard at onchain.gemini.com. This initiative aligns with Gemini's goal of making Web3 accessible to a broader audience.
Security and Ecosystem Integrations
The Gemini Wallet is backed by a robust partnership ecosystem. Blockaid provides security infrastructure to guard against scams and malicious DApps. Walletconnect ensures cross-device compatibility, allowing users to connect with thousands of DApps. Bungee enables efficient cross-chain token swaps, while Morpho allows users to deposit assets into curated DeFi vaults with real-time access and withdrawal capabilities. Full connectivity to the Gemini exchange is expected later this year, enabling seamless transfers between the exchange and the self-custody wallet.
Eric Kuhn, Gemini's head of onchain, stated: "Whether you're a retail investor looking for a secure, portable gateway to Web3, or a developer seeking an SDK kit to embed the wallet directly into your dapp, the Gemini Wallet brings flexibility, ease of use, and powerful security to onchain access." With this launch, Gemini positions itself as a key player in the self-custody wallet space, competing with offerings from Coinbase, Binance, and other major exchanges.
