Germany's second-largest financial institution, DZ BANK, secured a Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR) license from BaFin in late December 2025. The approval clears the way for a regulated crypto trading service called meinKrypto, which will be offered through more than 700 cooperative banks under the Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken brands. Starting in January 2026, millions of retail customers can potentially access digital assets without leaving their trusted local bank.
meinKrypto Integrated into the VR Banking App
Users no longer need to manage 12-word seed phrases or worry about lost private keys. The meinKrypto service is embedded directly into the VR Banking App, the standard mobile interface used by Germany's cooperative banks. Buying, selling, and holding crypto works as intuitively as checking a savings account. It is a self-directed service — customers decide when to trade, not a managed fund. At launch, four major assets will be supported: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Cardano (ADA).
Custody Outsourced to Boerse Stuttgart Digital
Rather than building its own custody infrastructure, DZ BANK partnered with Boerse Stuttgart Digital to handle the security and regulatory compliance. Customers see their balances in the app, but the actual coins are stored in Stuttgart's high-security regulated custody. This arrangement lets the bank meet stringent German oversight while leveraging an existing, proven crypto infrastructure provider.
Each Cooperative Bank Decides Independently; Over a Third Expect to Go Live in Q2 2026
The MiCAR license applies to DZ BANK as the central institution, but each individual Volksbank or Raiffeisenbank must choose whether to offer meinKrypto to its customers. They also need to file a brief notification to regulators before flipping the switch. Recent surveys indicate that over one-third of these lenders already plan to activate the service within the first few months of 2026. This means the rollout will be decentralized and gradual rather than a nationwide simultaneous launch.
Goal for 2026: Make Crypto as Normal as a Savings Account
For Germany's banking sector, the priority in 2026 is to normalize crypto assets alongside traditional products like stock portfolios and checking accounts. DZ BANK's initiative allows customers to buy digital assets from the same institution that holds their mortgage and salary. While the full transition may take months, the direction is clear: regulated channels are turning crypto from a niche hobby into a standard part of everyday finance.
