Data from Gate.io on June 3 revealed a mixed global market session. Precious metals declined, with gold falling to $4,452.57 per ounce, a daily drop of 0.82%, and silver slipping to $74.156 per ounce, down 0.92%. On the other hand, crypto volatility gauges surged: the Bitcoin Volatility Index (BVIX) hit 43.6, up 5.75% on the day, while the Ethereum Volatility Index (EVIX) climbed to 55, a 4.25% increase.
Precious Metals and Commodity Moves
In currency markets, the US dollar strengthened against the offshore Chinese yuan (USD/CNH), rising 0.17% to 6.77293, and edged up 0.05% against the Japanese yen (USD/JPY) to 159.942. Major European stock indexes closed lower: the Euro Stoxx 50 (EUSTX50) dipped 0.36% to 6,067.61, the UK’s FTSE 100 (UK100) lost 0.16% to 10,362.3, and Germany’s DAX 40 (GER40) fell 0.82% to 24,863.8. Bucking the trend, crude oil posted gains — WTI crude rose 1.35% to $97.26 per barrel, and Brent crude added 0.73% to $100.02 per barrel, supported by supply-side concerns.
Crypto Volatility Spikes
The sharp uptick in crypto volatility indexes reflected growing market pricing for near-term price swings. With BVIX rising over 5.7% and EVIX by more than 4%, options and derivatives traders appear to be preparing for significant moves, even as spot prices held relatively steady. Elevated BVIX levels signal higher expected volatility in bitcoin, as implied by options pricing.
