Goldman Sachs has barred most employees from using advanced AI coding tools after reviewing productivity and risk management issues, according to the report. Over the past few months, the bank had allowed staff to use Anthropic’s Claude Code and Microsoft’s GitHub for work. An internal guideline updated in October has now narrowed access to engineers. The change has frustrated some employees, including traders who had been using the tools to speed up monitoring of client trading flows, track market moves, model positions, and produce written and graphic materials. The move is not Goldman’s first restriction on AI tools. Earlier this year, the bank also limited Hong Kong employees’ use of Anthropic’s Claude. A separate source said the latest instruction does not apply to employees known as “Strats,” whose work sits at the intersection of trading, quantitative research, and software engineering.

Goldman Sachs has prohibited most employees from using advanced AI coding tools after assessing productivity and risk management issues, according to the report. The decision has drawn complaints from some staff.

For the past few months, the bank had allowed employees to use Anthropic’s Claude Code and Microsoft’s GitHub in their work. Under an internal guideline updated in October, access to those tools has now been restricted to engineers.

Some traders objected to the change

People familiar with the matter said the restriction upset some traders. They had been using the tools to speed up monitoring of client trading flows, track market changes, model positions, and produce written and graphic content.

Not Goldman’s first move to tighten AI access

This is not the first time Goldman Sachs has tightened employee access to specific AI tools. Earlier this year, the bank restricted Hong Kong employees from using Anthropic’s Claude.

Another person familiar with the matter said the latest instruction does not apply to employees known as “Strats,” a group whose work spans trading, quantitative research, and software engineering.
