Goldman Sachs data shows hedge funds sold off all of the global AI-related stocks they had accumulated since the start of 2025 in just five trading days, with net selling recorded for five straight sessions. The pullback extended beyond AI names: hedge funds cut roughly $20 billion in technology stocks over a two-week period, and most of that reduction came from selling existing long positions rather than adding fresh shorts. Goldman said the pace of selling was 3.5 times faster than the rate of new short positions in AI-related stocks. Separately, Goldman’s basket of hedge funds’ favorite stocks fell 4.2% on Oct. 22, marking its biggest one-day drop since 2011. Steno Research, citing Morgan Stanley data going back to 2016, also said overall hedge fund equity exposure was reduced by about 7.8%, the largest decline in that data series.
