Goldman Sachs said Super Micro Computer (SMCI) delivered a first-quarter pre-announcement well above its own guidance, but the bank still kept a Sell rating on the stock, arguing that valuation leaves limited room for further upside. Goldman’s 12-month price target remains $34, only 4.7% above SMCI’s Oct. 20 closing price of $32.47.

In a report dated Oct. 20, 2026, Goldman said SMCI pre-announced first-quarter revenue of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, versus prior company guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. Goldman and the FactSet consensus had both been at $15 billion. Gross margin was pre-announced at 12% to 12.5%, compared with prior guidance of 10.4% to 10.8%. Goldman said the revenue beat was driven mainly by strong AI platform demand, while the gross margin beat came from a favorable customer and product mix.
Revenue came in roughly 27% above guidance midpoint
SMCI’s first-quarter revenue range of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion implies a midpoint of $19 billion. That is 26.7% above the midpoint of the company’s prior guidance, which stood at $15 billion. It is also about 27% above the $15 billion figure used by both Goldman and the FactSet consensus.
Goldman said strong AI platform demand in the September quarter, along with a favorable customer and product mix, pushed both revenue and gross margin above expectations. The bank said a beat of this size is unusual for a hardware company and read it as a sign that AI server demand has not slowed.
SMCI did not update its fiscal 2027 outlook. The company had previously guided for full-year revenue of $65 billion to $72 billion. The latest pre-announcement covered only the first quarter, with a broader update expected on the Nov. 3 earnings call.
Goldman said SMCI’s customer base includes hyperscalers, emerging cloud providers, and enterprises, with AI platform demand spanning both training and inference. At the midpoint, the company’s revenue pre-announcement was 27% above consensus.
Gross margin moved up to 12% to 12.5%
On margins, SMCI pre-announced a gross margin range of 12% to 12.5%, implying a midpoint of 12.25%. Its prior guidance range was 10.4% to 10.8%, with a midpoint of 10.6%. That puts the new midpoint 1.65 percentage points, or 165 basis points, above the earlier outlook.
Goldman said the margin improvement was mainly tied to a better customer mix and product mix. A higher contribution from AI platforms supported profitability, according to the report. Goldman added that AI platforms carry higher gross margins than traditional servers, and that customer orders shifted from lower-priced deals toward higher-value orders.
The upper end of the new range, 12.5%, is 1.7 percentage points above the prior upper bound of 10.8%. Goldman said the combination of stronger revenue and stronger gross margin suggests first-quarter earnings could come in materially above prior expectations. SMCI did not provide first-quarter earnings-per-share guidance, and fuller figures are expected on the Nov. 3 earnings call.
Goldman said Dell also benefits from the demand signal
Goldman said SMCI’s pre-announcement also carries positive read-through for Dell Technologies (DELL). In the bank’s view, strong AI platform demand at SMCI in the September quarter points to the same demand backdrop for Dell’s AI server business.
Dell’s fiscal 2027 ends in January 2027, and the company has set an AI server sales target of $74 billion. Goldman kept its Buy rating on Dell and maintained a price target of $461.56. The bank said SMCI’s update suggests AI server demand remains strong and that Dell’s target may prove conservative.
Goldman also said that while SMCI and Dell compete in the AI server market, demand is large enough for both companies to benefit. The report said SMCI is more exposed to emerging cloud providers and enterprises, while Dell is more exposed to enterprises and government customers. As AI server demand broadens, orders are increasing for both companies.
The Sell rating comes down to valuation
Despite the stronger pre-announcement, Goldman maintained a Sell rating on SMCI. Its 12-month price target of $34 is based on 7.5x next-12-month-plus-one-year earnings per share. With the stock at $32.47 on Oct. 20, Goldman said the target leaves only limited upside.
The bank said the pre-announcement is positive and that the stock is likely to move higher on the news, but it added that the current valuation is already close to its target price. Goldman listed upside risks that could push the shares above $34, including stronger-than-expected AI server demand, market share gains, improvement in core operating margin, and greater customer diversification. Even so, the bank said the stock already reflects a substantial amount of optimism.
External financing remains a key watch point
Goldman also pointed to SMCI’s comment last quarter that its cash conversion cycle stood at 149 days, and that revenue above $80 billion could require external financing. The bank said rapid revenue growth would also increase working capital needs, making financing capacity a key factor in whether SMCI can keep outperforming.
The latest pre-announcement did not include any financing update. Goldman said the Nov. 3 earnings call will be an important point to watch. Its conclusion was straightforward: the pre-announcement reinforces strong AI server demand, but with the stock already near the $34 target, valuation limits the upside. Whether SMCI can address external financing before revenue moves past $80 billion will matter for whether the shares can break above that target.
