Gomining, one of the world's top ten Bitcoin miners with over five million users, launched GoBTC at Consensus Miami in May 2026. The open-source payment software promises instant transaction authorization and on-chain settlement within 12 hours, at a flat 0.2% merchant fee — significantly lower than the 1.5–3.5% charged by traditional card processors.
What Is GoBTC?
GoBTC gives merchants real-time authorization at the point of sale, with the actual Bitcoin on-chain settlement finalized within 12 hours using the base layer — not through a sidechain or payment channel. The protocol is non-custodial and free for users; merchants pay a 0.2% fee split evenly between wallet providers and Bitcoin miners. Any wallet service can integrate GoBTC, and Gomining has reserved a dedicated mining pool to confirm GoBTC transactions, ensuring dedicated block space without competing with regular Bitcoin traffic. The company aims to achieve full 12-hour on-chain settlement across the entire system by the end of 2026.
Why Now?
Bitcoin's 2009 whitepaper described it as a "peer-to-peer electronic cash system," but 17 years later, that vision remains largely unrealized in daily commerce. Only about 2,300 businesses in the U.S. accept Bitcoin directly, despite 22% of American adults owning the asset. The Lightning Network, launched in 2018, was designed to solve this but faced adoption hurdles due to routing complexity and limited merchant acceptance. Although Lightning processed $1.17 billion in monthly volume by November 2025 and over 12 million monthly transactions from 2026 onward, its growth has been slower than many hoped.
A Different Architecture
GoBTC takes a distinct approach: it settles directly on-chain using Bitcoin's block confirmation mechanism, with Gomining's mining infrastructure absorbing the settlement latency. The "authorize first, settle later" model depends on wallet providers integrating the protocol and merchants accepting a 12-hour finality window. While Lightning excels at instant micropayments, GoBTC targets medium-value transactions where both speed and base-layer security matter. Gomining is betting that the company best positioned to confirm Bitcoin transactions is also best positioned to settle them, marking its expansion from mining services into payments infrastructure. The scalability of GoBTC beyond early integrations will hinge on wallet provider adoption and merchant response to its settlement timeline.
