Founded in Luxembourg in summer 2011, Blockchain.info started as a reliable block explorer. It quickly climbed to the top 1,000 global websites on Alexa. Its suite expanded to include transaction data, charts, wallets, mined blocks, developer tools, and community forums. During its golden age in 2013–2014, Info became the most visited bitcoin-related site worldwide with 120 million monthly views, and was the first to reach one million wallets. When Apple removed its iOS app, user backlash was so severe that some smashed their iPhones. That era also saw Info raise tens of millions in venture capital while maintaining its street cred by integrating Tor into its wallet.
2017 Bull Run: $40M Raise and Exchange Ambitions
In the 2017 bull run, Info secured another $40 million in funding. It partnered with India’s Unocoin to boost crypto awareness, and evolved into a sort of exchange, enabling buy/sell services in nearly half of U.S. states. Today, the platform serves 25 million users for storing and investing in Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH), alongside market analysis and widely used API services.
Domain Migration: Seamless Transition and Forward Vision
“Later this month,” the company blog announced, “we will consolidate all pages under our single domain blockchain.com. This means one place for all your crypto needs.” Co-founder Nicolas Cary remains on board, also leading a youth entrepreneurship project called “Skies the Limit.” The firm promises a seamless transition, stating: “We’ve done a lot over the years, but have much more to do building the future of finance. As we move through 2018, we know your needs are evolving, and we aim to offer the end-to-end experience you’ve been waiting for.”
The domain shift reflects the broader evolution of crypto from wild west to polished industry, with older players like Blockchain.info adapting to a more unified brand identity and comprehensive service offering.
