Techub News, citing CryptoBriefing, reported that Google has announced an additional $1.5 billion investment in its data center in Jackson County, Alabama. The funding is designated for expansion work scheduled for 2026 through 2027. After this new round of spending, Google’s total investment in the facility since 2018 will exceed $2 billion.
A carbon-free facility built on a former coal power site
The data center was built on the site of a decommissioned coal-fired power plant and began operations in 2019. According to the report, the facility runs entirely on carbon-free energy, placing it within Google’s broader data infrastructure buildout in the region.
Google has also partnered with the Tennessee Valley Authority to launch a $2 million Energy Impact Fund, which will support local energy-efficiency projects. The construction of hyperscale data centers of this kind reflects the surge in demand for AI training, while such facilities are competing with Bitcoin miners for energy resources.
