Business Insider, citing interviews with eight current and former Google employees, reported that one of Gemini’s de facto command centers is tucked inside a second-floor break room at the company’s Mountain View offices. The space, once used for coffee, snacks and a refrigerator, now holds desks and regularly hosts Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Google DeepMind head Koray Kavukcuoglu and other key staff. Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai also stops by several times a week, according to the report.
The report said employees refer to the area as “Sergey’s mini-kitchen.” While Brin does not hold a formal management role, current and former employees told Business Insider that his founder status lets him bypass Google’s normal approval layers. For Gemini teams seeking TPU chips and other resources, that can create a faster route than the standard process of preparing documentation and getting sign-off from senior executives.
Business Insider also said Brin has been directly involved in discussions on model size, product release timing and AGI strategy. A former employee described his approach as trying to run Gemini like a startup. The report added that Brin pushed this year to record parts of some employees’ coding process for reinforcement learning data and that he last year halted Jeff Dean’s Frozen chip project before it later returned as Frozen v2.

According to Business Insider, Brin does not hold a formal management title, but his status as a founder allows him to move around Google’s internal approval structure more directly. For Gemini staff, the normal route to request TPU chips and other computing resources involves preparing materials and securing approval from senior leadership. Going to the kitchen to find Brin is described as a more direct alternative.
The report said Brin also takes part in discussions on model scale, release timing and the path toward artificial general intelligence, or AGI. Gemini’s coding strike team has also placed its desks near him.
Former employee says Brin wants to run Gemini like a startup
One former employee told Business Insider that Brin wanted to run Gemini as if it were a startup. The report added that this year he pushed to use software to record parts of some Google employees’ coding process and feed that data into reinforcement learning to improve Gemini’s coding performance.
Business Insider also said Brin personally halted the Frozen chip project led by Jeff Dean last year. The project later returned in the form of Frozen v2.
