Details of the $80 Billion Fundraising
Google parent Alphabet (GOOG.O) has unveiled a massive equity fundraising plan, aiming to raise $80 billion to fuel its ambitious AI infrastructure spending. According to the company's announcement, the offering includes a $30 billion underwritten public offering and a $40 billion at-the-market (ATM) program. Under an ATM program, shares are sold gradually into the open market at prevailing prices, providing flexibility and minimizing market impact. The combined targeted capital reaches $80 billion.
Alphabet stated in the release: "AI demand has exceeded the company's existing supply capacity. By expanding investment, the company aims to scale its infrastructure to provide strong support for future enormous growth opportunities." The funds will accelerate deployments in AI computing, data centers, and related critical infrastructure, addressing rapidly surging computational requirements from both internal and cloud-based AI services.
Berkshire Hathaway Commits $10 Billion
As a key pillar of this financing plan, Berkshire Hathaway, led by Warren Buffett, will participate via a private placement, purchasing $10 billion worth of Alphabet shares. Specifically, Alphabet will issue $5 billion in Class A common stock to Berkshire at $351.81 per share, and another $5 billion in Class C common stock at $348.20 per share. This private placement will provide Alphabet with additional long-term capital.
The scale of this equity raise stands among the largest in the tech sector, reinforcing Alphabet's capital advantage in the AI arms race. The move comes as technology giants race to scale up infrastructure to meet the exponential growth in AI workloads.
