Grayscale Introduces Two New Bitcoin Covered Call ETFs
Leading crypto asset manager Grayscale has announced the launch of two new bitcoin-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs): the Grayscale Bitcoin Covered Call ETF (BTCC) and the Grayscale Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BPI). Both actively managed funds employ covered call options strategies designed to generate income from Bitcoin's volatility while providing exposure to Bitcoin's price movements.
BTCC: Maximizing Current Income
According to the press release, BTCC focuses on writing call options close to Bitcoin's spot price, thereby collecting higher option premiums. This approach makes BTCC suitable for investors prioritizing consistent cash flow. During market downturns, the option premiums may help mitigate downside risks by partially offsetting losses.
BPI: Balancing Income and Upside Potential
In contrast, BPI adopts a more balanced strategy by writing call options with strike prices further out-of-the-money. Although the premiums are lower, this allows investors to retain some upside participation in Bitcoin's price appreciation. When Bitcoin rallies strongly, BPI investors can benefit from capital gains while still receiving dividend-like income.
Product Features and Market Context
Both ETFs are actively managed, fully options-based, and aim to distribute income monthly. David LaValle, Global Head of ETFs at Grayscale, said: 'We understand that every investor has unique needs, and we’re excited to offer these new products that not only may capture and deliver income but also offer differentiated outcomes and behavioral characteristics tailored to their specific goals.'
The launch expands Grayscale's existing ETF lineup, which already includes spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs. By packaging covered call strategies into an ETF format, Grayscale enables traditional investors to gain income from Bitcoin volatility without directly trading options, thereby lowering the barrier to entry.
Risk Considerations
While covered call strategies perform well in sideways or moderately bullish markets, BTCC may cap capital appreciation during strong Bitcoin rallies due to its near-spot call writing. BPI retains more upside but offers lower premium income. Investors should choose based on their risk tolerance and income objectives.
