Grayscale's latest research note flags XRP Ledger and Solana as early leaders in the race to post-quantum blockchain security, citing faster-than-expected advances in quantum computing. The report stresses that Google Quantum AI's new findings have drastically shortened the timeline for classical encryption to be broken.

Quantum Timeline Narrows Faster Than Expected

Zach Pandl, Grayscale's Head of Research, noted that a recent study from Google Quantum AI signals meaningful progress in quantum capabilities, pushing the industry toward immediate action. Earlier estimates placed quantum threats decades away, but new data suggests that fewer than 500,000 physical qubits could solve complex cryptographic problems—a sharp reduction from prior projections. Pandl emphasized that blockchains must begin strengthening defenses now, highlighting XRP Ledger and Solana for their early experimentation with post-quantum cryptography.

Aanchal Malhotra, Ripple's Head of Research, pointed out that Google validated its findings using a zero-knowledge proof rather than releasing the full method, meaning parts of quantum progress are no longer fully public. She confirmed that wallet security faces no immediate risk but warned that the pace of advancement is accelerating beyond industry expectations, increasing pressure on developers to act.

Ripple and Solana's Quantum Readiness Status

Ripple CTO David Schwartz had previously stated that XRP Ledger was not inherently quantum-resistant but could be upgraded when risks became more imminent—a timeline that now appears closer than anticipated. Ripple has not yet announced a specific upgrade schedule, but Malhotra said the company is closely monitoring developments.

Solana, which has earlier experimented with quantum-resistant solutions via Starkware, benefits from its architectural flexibility, according to Grayscale. The report warns that delaying adaptation will leave networks more vulnerable once quantum technology matures.

Industry Faces Critical Transition Window

Google Quantum AI has indicated a possible meaningful quantum impact around 2029, aligning with earlier preparedness windows cited by Ripple's leadership. Pandl concluded that early movers like XRP Ledger and Solana are setting the benchmark for the broader crypto ecosystem's migration to quantum-resistant systems.
