Blockchain analytics platform OnchainLens reported that Grayscale Investments, the world’s largest digital asset manager, has withdrawn approximately $32.9 million worth of cryptocurrency from Coinbase within the past six hours. The transfer includes 11,169 Ether (ETH), valued at roughly $22.86 million, and 150.4 Bitcoin (BTC), worth about $10.07 million based on current market prices. This marks Grayscale’s largest single withdrawal since May 2025.
Withdrawal Details and Context
The transactions occurred around 18:00 UTC on July 10, 2026, routing funds to Grayscale’s cold wallet addresses. OnchainLens analysts noted that Grayscale often moves assets ahead of portfolio rebalancing or liquidity provisioning for new funds. The firm manages several popular trusts, including the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) and Grayscale Ethereum Trust (ETHE), with combined assets exceeding $30 billion.
Although Grayscale has not launched a new public fund recently, market speculation suggests this withdrawal may be related to the company’s pending SEC filing for a crypto index ETF. Grayscale has previously expressed intent to offer a passive ETF covering multiple major crypto assets.
Market Dynamics and Capital Flows
The crypto market showed modest gains around the time of the withdrawal. Bitcoin rose 1.30% and Ethereum gained 1.46% in the past 24 hours. However, institutional capital flows have been mixed. While Grayscale’s off-exchange transfer is often interpreted as a bullish signal, US spot Bitcoin ETFs have recorded net outflows for nine consecutive trading days, indicating cautious retail sentiment.
Analysts believe Grayscale’s removal of large ETH and BTC from Coinbase may aim to reduce reliance on centralized exchange custody or to replenish its over-the-counter (OTC) trading inventory. Since 2025, Grayscale has conducted several similar large transfers, cumulatively moving over 50,000 BTC and 400,000 ETH.
Industry Impact and Outlook
This transaction reinforces Grayscale’s status as a crypto whale whose asset movements are closely watched as a barometer of institutional conviction. Grayscale currently holds approximately 630,000 BTC and nearly 3 million ETH. The latest withdrawal represents less than 0.1% of its total holdings, yet the dollar amount remains significant.
Coinbase’s asset reserves have been declining. According to CryptoQuant, Coinbase’s BTC reserves have fallen to their lowest since 2020, while ETH reserves continue to shrink. Large investors are increasingly moving assets to self-custody wallets, a trend often seen as long-term holding behavior.
Overall, Grayscale’s latest withdrawal reflects routine asset management but also signals continued institutional confidence in the crypto market. Market participants will watch for any new trust product announcements from Grayscale and monitor persistent shifts in capital flows in the coming weeks.
