Helius, a leading developer tools provider in the Solana ecosystem, has completed the acquisition of privacy protocol Light Protocol under the leadership of founder and CEO Mert Mumtaz. The deal merges Light Protocol's cryptography expertise with Helius's distribution muscle and technical foundation, targeting the development of private transfers and confidential DeFi products on Solana.
According to Helius, the new system is being designed as a programmable and flexible privacy infrastructure, adaptable to a variety of use cases. Light Protocol was founded in 2021 with a focus on zero-knowledge privacy for Solana, later shifting to ZK Compression technology, which was introduced in 2024 to reduce on-chain storage costs. The acquisition brings Light Protocol back to its original mission: building a zero-knowledge privacy protocol specifically for Solana applications (name yet to be finalized).
Roadmap for Privacy Infrastructure
Helius plans to make this infrastructure accessible to developers in the coming months. The first phase will focus on pilot programs for private transfers, confidential DeFi apps, and customizable privacy settings. By building a flexible and broad-based platform, Helius aims to appeal to both individual users and enterprise clients. Mumtaz argues that privacy is fundamental for mainstream blockchain adoption, comparing its role to HTTPS encryption in online commerce.
A zero-knowledge proof is a cryptographic method that mathematically proves the validity of information without revealing the information itself. ZK Compression applies this approach to minimize on-chain data load and enables applications to scale at lower costs. Helius will support Light Protocol's development and integrate the resulting technology into its tool suite.
M&A Wave and Privacy Revival
The transaction is part of a broader trend of mergers and acquisitions in the crypto sector, which has accelerated as venture capital shrinks and many projects downsize. Infrastructure firms with strong balance sheets are pursuing strategic deals to enhance technical capabilities. Simultaneously, privacy solutions are regaining prominence: the Ethereum Foundation is reportedly channeling resources into privacy-focused projects, while interest in Zcash has been revitalized among developers and users.
Through this acquisition, Helius intends to bring the crypto sector's rich history of cryptography directly to user-facing products, transforming Light Protocol's technical foundation into a core component of Solana's privacy layer.
