Hex Trust has announced that it will issue and custody wrapped XRP (wXRP), a move aimed at extending XRP beyond its traditional role in payments and settlement into regulated, cross-chain DeFi infrastructure. The launch adds a new institutional layer to the XRP ecosystem by pairing onchain utility with licensed custody and reserve-backed issuance.

How wXRP is structured

According to the announcement, wXRP is a 1:1-backed representation of native XRP. New wXRP is minted only when an equivalent amount of XRP is held in Hex Trust’s regulated custody framework. The firm said the underlying XRP reserves will be maintained in segregated custody, while issuance and redemption are designed to ensure that circulating wXRP remains fully matched by reserves at all times.

This structure is intended to make XRP usable in environments where native XRP may not be directly integrated, particularly across DeFi applications and multichain networks. Rather than replacing XRP Ledger, the product is positioned as a bridge that allows XRP liquidity to move into additional blockchain ecosystems while keeping reserve management under a compliant framework.

Launch scale and liquidity focus

One of the most notable details in the rollout is the planned launch scale. Hex Trust said wXRP will go live with more than $100 million in total value locked, giving the asset a sizable liquidity base from day one. The company argued that this initial depth should support smoother trading, stronger price discovery, and healthier market conditions during the early phase of adoption.

In practical terms, deep starting liquidity can be critical for wrapped assets. It helps reduce slippage, supports more reliable market-making, and makes the token more useful for traders, liquidity providers, and DeFi protocols. By emphasizing TVL at launch, Hex Trust is signaling that wXRP is meant to begin as an institutional-grade market rather than an experimental listing with thin volume.

Cross-chain utility and RLUSD trading pairs

Hex Trust said wXRP’s use cases will expand beyond the XRP Ledger and include trading activity with RLUSD on Ethereum and other chains where RLUSD is available. That detail is important because it links XRP liquidity not only to general DeFi access, but also to potential stablecoin-based trading and settlement activity in multichain environments.

The company framed the launch as a way to broaden utility for both XRP and RLUSD across supported blockchains. By enabling these assets to interact inside DeFi venues, the initiative could support new trading pairs, improved collateral options, and wider routing opportunities across different networks.

Initial blockchain support

At launch, wXRP is expected to support Solana, Optimism, Ethereum, and HyperEVM, with additional chain integrations planned later. This initial selection spans multiple major blockchain environments, including high-throughput networks and established DeFi ecosystems. The choice suggests that the product is being built for broad market access rather than for a single-chain audience.

Ripple executive commentary also highlighted the cross-chain design. Reece Merrick, Ripple’s senior executive officer and managing director for the Middle East and Africa, said on X that Hex Trust launched wrapped XRP on LayerZero’s OFT Standard, starting with Solana to bring native XRP liquidity into DeFi across chains.

Institutional messaging around compliance

Hex Trust has leaned heavily on compliance and regulated infrastructure in its messaging. Giorgia Pellizzari, the company’s chief product officer and head of custody, said wXRP is meant to expand XRP liquidity across DeFi and cross-chain networks while increasing utility between XRP and RLUSD. She added that users of both assets would benefit from infrastructure built on trusted and compliant foundations.

That positioning matters in the current market environment, where institutions often require clearly defined custody, reserve controls, and issuance governance before participating in tokenized or wrapped asset markets. By presenting wXRP as a fully backed and regulated product, Hex Trust appears to be targeting users and counterparties who want onchain functionality without stepping outside formal risk controls.

Ripple’s view: more environments, more utility

Ripple CTO David Schwartz also voiced support for the broader direction. In a post on X, he said that more XRP ecosystems are a good thing because allowing XRP to operate in more environments builds utility, while the XRP Ledger remains the anchor that makes it all work.

That comment reflects a broader strategic theme: expanding XRP into other chains does not necessarily weaken XRPL’s role. Instead, supporters argue that wrapped and cross-chain versions can increase overall demand and relevance by making XRP available wherever users trade, borrow, lend, or provide liquidity.

Why the launch matters

The wXRP rollout is significant because it represents more than the release of another wrapped token. It points to a maturing XRP market structure in which regulated custody, deep initial liquidity, interoperable standards, and stablecoin pairings are being combined to push XRP into a wider range of financial applications.

For the XRP ecosystem, the development could help shift market perception from a narrow payments narrative toward a broader role in cross-chain DeFi, liquidity provisioning, and onchain trading infrastructure. For institutions, it offers a framework that blends blockchain accessibility with reserve-backed oversight. And for DeFi users, it creates another path to access XRP liquidity on chains where DeFi activity is already concentrated.

Whether adoption scales will depend on execution, protocol integrations, and user demand across the supported chains. But based on the details released so far, Hex Trust is positioning wXRP as a serious liquidity product built for multichain markets from the outset.
