On July 20 at 2:45 PM, a well-orchestrated gold heist unfolded at a gold shop in Peninsula Plaza, Hung Hom, Hong Kong. A man posing as a buyer entered the office for a legitimate transaction, while two men and a woman burst in moments later, claiming the shop owner owed a huge debt. In the chaos, the fake buyer and the intruders grabbed 73 gold bars weighing 73 kg, worth over HK$100 million (approx. US$7.2 million), and escaped with suitcases.

Inside the Heist: Buyer Acted as Scout, 'Debt Collectors' Struck

The robbery was not random. The undercover buyer used the transaction to map the location of the gold and staff positions. Then the three accomplices stormed in, using the 'debt collection' pretext to create confusion. They worked together to pack the one-kilogram bars into luggage and fled by car. Police said the division of roles indicated careful pre-planning.

Police Sweep: CCTV Tracking, Coordinated Arrests in Central and Tai Po

The West Kowloon Regional Crime Unit quickly reviewed surveillance footage and used intelligence to trace the suspects. Simultaneous raids in Central and Tai Po led to the arrest of five individuals — four men and one woman. All 73 kg of gold was found in a vehicle near a Tai Po suspect's residence. The gold was fully recovered. All five are being held for questioning as the investigation continues.

Rising Gold Demand Heightens Physical Asset Security Concerns

Geopolitical tensions, particularly US-Israeli military actions against Iran, have pushed gold spot prices to around US$4,500 per ounce. While below record highs, demand remains strong. Hong Kong, a major Asian gold hub, handles vast volumes of physical bullion, making it a target for organized crime.

Confidentiality Is the First Line of Defense in Large Transactions

Police urged the public to keep transaction details and itineraries strictly confidential when dealing with high-value assets. Whether gold bars, cash, or other valuables, protecting information before the deal is the most effective way to prevent theft.
