TechFlow reported on June 13, citing information published on the website of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, that Hong Kong Mortgage Corporation Limited announced on June 11, 2026, the successful pricing of its first public digital bond offering. The transaction was carried out under the company’s US$30 billion medium-term note programme and totaled approximately HK$12 billion equivalent.
According to the announcement, the deal set a record as the largest digital bond issuance globally to date. Hong Kong Mortgage Corporation also became the first public sector entity in Hong Kong to issue a digital bond, marking a new transaction type for the institution within its existing funding programme.
Three tranches denominated in Hong Kong dollars and renminbi
The offering consisted of three separate tranches: a HK$6 billion two-year bond, a HK$2.5 billion five-year bond, and a RMB3 billion three-year bond. Among them, the five-year Hong Kong dollar tranche was described as the longest-tenor Hong Kong dollar digital bond ever issued, establishing a new benchmark for the Hong Kong dollar bond market.
At the peak of the bookbuilding process, total subscriptions reached about HK$24 billion equivalent. Demand came from more than 100 accounts, with investor participation spanning multilateral development banks, central banks, banks, private banks, insurance companies and asset management companies.
Digital generation and shorter settlement cycle
The digital bonds were digitally generated on a distributed ledger technology platform. The settlement cycle was shortened from five business days to three business days, according to the details released through the Hong Kong Monetary Authority website.
Investors are able to trade the bonds through the existing infrastructure of the Central Moneymarkets Unit, as well as through its links to Euroclear and Clearstream accounts. The arrangement connects the digital bond issuance with current debt market infrastructure and international clearing channels.
