The $36 Million Hack: Laptop Compromise, Not Smart Contract Exploit

Humanity Protocol founder Terence Kwok revealed that the project suffered a roughly $36 million hack, which did not originate from a smart contract vulnerability. Instead, an attacker breached a developer's laptop via a phishing email, obtaining private keys of a Humanity Foundation member. The attacker then cross-chain minted and dumped tokens, draining the treasury and causing H token to crater approximately 89%.

Strategic Pivot: From Identity + Blockchain to Enterprise AI

In response to the crisis, Kwok stated that the project is repositioning itself from its original "identity + blockchain" focus toward enterprise-grade AI products. The new direction centers on providing identity and asset attestation services for AI companies. This pivot marks a significant departure from the original vision of decentralized identity on-chain, instead targeting the growing demand from AI enterprises for trusted identity verification and asset provenance.

Low Recovery Hopes and Ecosystem Rebuild

Kwok acknowledged that the probability of recovering the stolen funds is "very low." The team has launched a token migration and claims process to restore the ecosystem. At the same time, authorities in Hong Kong and multiple jurisdictions have been notified. The reoriented product line will leverage blockchain technology to serve AI firms with identity authentication and data provenance capabilities.

The incident highlights a critical security weak point in crypto projects: developer endpoints rather than protocol code. It underscores the importance of private key management and cross-chain asset vigilance for both investors and users.
