Hyperliquid's HIP-3 trading volume set a new weekend record on Sunday, reaching $720 million in single-day trades. The surge was driven by escalating geopolitical tensions and a sharp rise in crude oil prices, which pushed traders to seek hedging tools on decentralized perpetual swap markets when traditional finance was closed for the weekend.
Geopolitical Trigger on Feb 28
The catalyst came on Saturday, February 28, when tensions flared between the United States, Israel, and Iran. With crude oil futures markets shut for the weekend, traders turned to Hyperliquid's crude oil perpetual contracts to manage risk. Over the next nine days, oil prices surged 80%, drawing in a wave of participants and pushing HIP-3 volume to the $720 million peak.
“Traditional finance simply moves too slowly for modern global events,” a trader noted on social media. “When a major crisis breaks out on a Saturday, professional traders cannot wait two full days to act.”
Silver's Precedent: $4.67 Billion Peak
This was not the first time HIP-3 absorbed extreme price action in a traditional asset. Between November 20 and January 12, daily volume averaged between $300 million and $500 million. Then silver prices rocketed from $85 to $114 in two weeks, only to crash back to $80 in a single day. That wild swing pulled in the platform's first big wave of users, pushing HIP-3 to a peak weekday volume of $4.67 billion.
Both episodes underscore a structural shift: decentralized perpetual swaps are capturing demand for traditional asset risk management. For users without access to bank accounts or who need to trade outside normal hours, 24/7 DeFi markets fill a critical gap in global finance.
Native Token HYPE Stands to Benefit
If HIP-3 volume sustains its current trajectory, Hyperliquid's native token HYPE could capture significant value. Compared to competing digital assets, HYPE is well positioned with strong liquidity and user retention. As global anxieties persist, round-the-clock trading platforms will only grow larger.
