Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) has launched seven cryptocurrency futures contracts based on CoinDesk indices, expanding its regulated digital asset derivatives lineup. The new contracts are U.S. dollar-denominated and cash-settled, removing the need for physical delivery. They include the ICE CoinDesk 20 Index Futures, the ICE CoinDesk 5 Index Futures, and single-asset futures for Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, XRP, and BNB. According to ICE, over $40 billion in assets under management are linked to CoinDesk Indices, with the CoinDesk 20 covering more than 90% of the digital asset market and its linked products generating over $16 billion in cumulative volume.
Index and Single-Asset Coverage in One Suite
The CoinDesk 20 uses a capped market-cap-weighted methodology to offer broad exposure across major assets including Bitcoin, BNB, Ether, and Solana. The CoinDesk 5 tracks the top five constituents of the broader index. ICE Futures U.S. President Jennifer Ilkiw said the partnership with CoinDesk brings greater transparency to the digital asset market, adding that the launch expands ICE's existing relationship with the index provider.
Cash Settlement Lowers Institutional Barriers
All seven contracts are cash-settled in U.S. dollars, aligning with traditional derivatives infrastructure and appealing to institutions seeking capital-efficient exposure within a regulated framework. David LaValle, President of CoinDesk Data and Indices, stated that CoinDesk Indices were designed as trusted benchmarks and that moving into ICE's regulated futures market offers familiar and reliable ways for participants to engage with digital assets.
DeFi Rate Futures on the Horizon
ICE also announced plans to introduce a One Month CoinDesk Overnight Rates (CDOR) USDC futures contract, subject to regulatory review. The CDOR rate reflects the annualized effective interest paid by borrowers in DeFi markets and mirrors conventional overnight benchmarks like SOFR or €STR. If approved, this would mark the first regulated rate derivative tied to DeFi yields, further bridging the gap between traditional finance and decentralized metrics.
