Star Financial Bank (Star Bank), an Indiana-based community bank, has officially launched bitcoin trading services for its customers, making it the first bank in the state to offer such capabilities. The service is available through the Star Mobile Banking App, allowing users to buy, sell and hold bitcoin alongside their traditional deposit accounts.

Partnerships with NYDIG and Alkami

The bitcoin trading infrastructure is powered by New York Digital Investment Group (NYDIG), a leading bitcoin financial services firm and a subsidiary of Stone Ridge Asset Management, along with Alkami Technology, a cloud-based digital banking platform provider. Alkami's founder and chief strategy and sales officer, Stephen Bohanon, said: “Early technology adopters appreciate the importance of embracing bitcoin opportunities.” The integration enables Star Bank to offer a seamless, secure experience for customers without building the crypto stack from scratch.

Closed Beta Launch and Details

Star Bank announced the initiative on November 2, 2021, stating the service is initially available as a closed beta. Selected customers can buy or sell bitcoin directly within the mobile app. The bank emphasized that all bitcoin transactions are settled via NYDIG, and customer bitcoin holdings are held in separate custody accounts to mitigate risk. No minimum balance or transaction amount has been disclosed publicly.

Star Financial Group, the parent company of Star Bank, has $2.8 billion in assets and operates 36 branches across central and northeast Indiana. The move positions the community bank at the forefront of digital asset adoption among smaller financial institutions.

Implications for Community Banks

While large Wall Street banks like JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs have already dipped into crypto for high-net-worth clients, community banks have been slower to enter the space due to compliance complexity and cost. Star Bank's decision signals a shift: with the right partners, regional banks can offer crypto services while maintaining regulatory compliance and customer trust. The bank clarified that bitcoin trading is not a FDIC-insured product, and customers bear full market risk.

According to recent surveys, over 15% of Indiana residents have expressed interest in purchasing cryptocurrency. Star Bank's CEO noted in an internal memo that the move is a natural response to growing customer demand for digital asset exposure.

NYDIG has been aggressively expanding its B2B network, partnering with dozens of credit unions and banks to bring bitcoin trading to millions of account holders. Alkami's cloud platform supports over 200 financial institutions in the U.S., enabling rapid deployment of new features like crypto trading. The collaboration exemplifies how traditional banking infrastructure can adapt to the decentralized economy.

Star Bank plans to gradually expand the service to all customers after the beta phase. Fees and transaction limits will be announced at a later date.
