Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said on Aug. 8 that Iran and Oman are very close to reaching an agreement on a legal mechanism and management framework for the Strait of Hormuz, as well as on the shipping routes allowed through the waterway. He added that reopening the strait still depends on other conditions, including action by the United States to make up for its violations of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding. Araghchi said the strait once had a traffic separation scheme, but Iran believes the old route is no longer suitable for ships and cannot accept continuing to use it. Setting up a new navigation mechanism involves complex technical and legal issues. The two countries are currently discussing a temporary route. Before the final official route is settled, a provisional shipping lane will be established first, serving as the basis for the future permanent route. Military departments of Iran and Oman have already started consultations based on existing nautical charts. Once the negotiations are completed and final conclusions are reached, the new route will be confirmed. Jinshi reported.

Tehran and Muscat nearing deal

Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said on Aug. 8 that Iran is negotiating with Oman on the legal mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz, how the strait should be managed, and how shipping routes through it are determined. The two sides are very close to reaching an agreement.

Reopening the strait, however, depends on other conditions. Araghchi pointed to the need for the United States to make up for its violations of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding.

Old traffic separation scheme rejected

Araghchi said the strait previously operated with a traffic separation scheme. Iran believes the old route is no longer suitable as a passage for ships and cannot accept keeping it in use. Working out a new navigation mechanism will involve complex technical and legal questions, he added.

Temporary lane before final route

The two countries are now talking about a temporary navigation route. Before the new official route is finalized, a temporary shipping lane will be established first, and that lane will serve as the basis for the future formal route. Iran and Oman's military departments have already begun consultations using existing nautical charts. Once the negotiations are completed and final conclusions are formed, the new navigation route will be confirmed.

Jinshi reported.
