Committee spokesperson Hassan Qashqavi said on Sunday that the measure would allow Iran to charge fees for maritime services, environmental services, fuel supplied in special situations, insurance, security, and other services. The charges would apply to ships from relevant countries that are authorized to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, with payment to be made in rials or in another currency designated by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Qashqavi also said the rights of countries along the strait must be taken seriously, adding that international laws and regulations recognize not only freedom of navigation, but also the need to respect the security and sovereignty of coastal states and prevent violations of those rights.
