Middle East tensions escalated again as Iran unilaterally announced a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel. A senior Iranian official told Lebanese media Al Mayadeen that after Tehran's pressure, a one-week truce would begin tonight (July 15) and could be extended.
Iran Demands U.S. Rein in Israel
The Iranian source said the ceasefire was achieved solely due to Iran's efforts, warning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to violate it. Tehran also called on Washington to restrain Israel's military actions.
Israel Swiftly Denies Any Deal
Within hours, Israeli officials rejected the claim. Israeli state media and senior officials stated: "No ceasefire decision has been made." The IDF confirmed it would continue operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
U.S.-Iran Rift Before Talks
The contradictory statements highlight deep divisions. Since early April, a shaky two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran has been in place, but key disagreements remain over whether it covers Lebanon. Diplomatic talks in Washington have stalled over Hezbollah's disarmament.
