According to a report from top crypto media outlet CryptoComLearn, Amazon is reportedly preparing a major cryptocurrency payment initiative expected to launch by the end of 2021, starting with Bitcoin (BTC) and gradually expanding to Ethereum (ETH), Cardano (ADA), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH). More strikingly, the company is also exploring the launch of its own native token in 2022. The information comes from an Amazon insider who claims the directive originates from the very top — founder Jeff Bezos himself.
Insider: Project 'Ready to Roll,' Under Development Since 2019
The report cites an Amazon insider who stated that the crypto project is 'not just going through the motions' but is 'a full-on, well-discussed, integral part of the future mechanism of how Amazon will work.' She elaborated: 'It begins with bitcoin – this is the key first stage of this crypto project, and the directive is coming from the very top … Jeff Bezos himself.' The insider further revealed that the entire project is 'pretty much ready to roll' because 'the plans are already there, and they have been working on them since 2019.'
Once a fast and secure Bitcoin payment method is established, Amazon's directors are keen to add support for other major cryptocurrencies. The insider listed the subsequent order: 'Ethereum, cardano and bitcoin cash will be next in line before they bring about eight of the most popular cryptocurrencies online.' This would position Amazon as one of the most crypto-friendly major retailers globally.
Native Token: A Loyalty Program and Payment Ecosystem Upgrade
Beyond accepting crypto payments, Amazon is also actively exploring launching its own coin. According to the insider, 'When all these crypto ducks are lined up, there's another twist to push things even further into Amazon's favour – a native token.' She added: 'After a year of experiencing cryptocurrency as a way of making payments for goods, it is looking increasingly possible that we're heading towards tokenisation.' The insider described a multi-level infrastructure where users can pay for goods and services or earn tokens in a loyalty scheme. This suggests Amazon may build a closed-loop crypto ecosystem combining payments, rewards, and incentives.
Official Response: Interest Confirmed, Specific Plans Denied
Shortly after the report was published, Bloomberg quoted an Amazon spokesperson saying: 'Notwithstanding our interest in the space, the speculation that has ensued around our specific plans for cryptocurrencies is not true. We remain focused on exploring what this could look like for customers shopping on Amazon … We believe the future will be built on new technologies that enable modern, fast and inexpensive payments, and hope to bring that future to Amazon customers as soon as possible.' This statement slightly downplays the insider's claims but does not completely rule out Amazon's eventual adoption of crypto payments.
Notably, Amazon had previously posted a job listing for a 'Digital Currency and Blockchain Product Lead,' and Jeff Bezos himself has made sporadic comments about cryptocurrencies in the past. These actions have fueled market expectations that Amazon will eventually embrace crypto payments. If the plan materializes, Amazon would join the ranks of Tesla and PayPal as major tech companies supporting cryptocurrency payments at scale, potentially driving massive global adoption.
