He doesn't flash yachts or pose with scantily-clad groupies. A safe bet would be that he doesn't own a sharkskin suit. Yet Jihan Wu, co-founder of Bitmain Technologies, is arguably the most important figure in cryptocurrency right now. At just 32, Wu has built a company doing billions in revenue, dominating Bitcoin mining from chips to pools.
Bitmain and the ASIC Revolution
Wu, a former financial analyst, became the first person to translate Satoshi Nakamoto's Bitcoin whitepaper into Chinese. In 2013, he co-founded Bitmain with Micree Zhan, focusing on application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for mining. These chips are roughly 300 times faster than GPUs, becoming the global standard. Today, Bitmain's Antminer series commands about 80% of the mining hardware market, generating billions in annual revenue.
Mining Pools and Ecosystem
Bitmain operates Antpool, one of the largest mining pools, along with BTC.com. Depending on the period, Antpool accounts for roughly 25% of all Bitcoin blocks mined, rising to 40% when combined with BTC.com. The company also offers cloud mining via Hashnest. Through these holdings, Wu effectively controls a significant share of the network's hashrate.
Controversy and Bitcoin Cash Fork
Wu's dominance has attracted fierce criticism. Competitors have accused Bitmain of orchestrating 51% attacks on rival chains and engaging in shady tactics — allegations Wu angrily denies. His most controversial act was supporting the August 2017 fork that created Bitcoin Cash (BCH). Wu is a vocal advocate of BCH, arguing it better fulfills Satoshi's vision of a peer-to-peer electronic cash system.
IPO and AI Expansion
Bitmain is planning a record-breaking initial public offering (IPO) that could value the company at nearly $10 billion. If successful, it would allow Bitmain to compete with public chip giants like Nvidia and Mediatek. Wu told Fortune: "We will continue investing in R&D for mining rigs, and also deploy AI acceleration products." This marks a pivot beyond crypto into artificial intelligence hardware.
Regulation and the Road Ahead
Wu recognizes the importance of regulators. Bitmain led a funding round in Circle, a U.S. crypto startup valued at $3 billion, to gain regulatory experience. "We need to work with regulators, not just try to get around them," Wu said. As Bitcoin halving cycles and mining difficulty evolve, Jihan Wu and Bitmain remain pivotal forces shaping the crypto landscape.
