Wall Street Goes Onchain: JPMorgan's JPMD Token Pilot
JPMorgan Chase & Co. announced on June 17 that it will launch a pilot for JPMD, a digital deposit token representing U.S. dollar holdings, on Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain incubated by Coinbase. This move marks a significant expansion of the banking giant's blockchain operations into public infrastructure, following its filing for a service mark for JPMD. According to Naveen Mallela, global co-head of Kinexys by JPMorgan, the bank will transfer a fixed amount of JPMD from its digital wallet to Coinbase Global Inc. as part of the pilot. The transaction will settle on Base, which uses the Optimism Superchain stack for sub-second finality and sub-cent fees.
Key Features of JPMD
JPMD distinguishes itself from stablecoins by representing direct claims on commercial bank deposits, potentially offering features such as interest and deposit insurance. Mallela stated: “It’s the first time that a commercial bank is putting commercial money, a deposit-based product, on a public chain and we are starting with Base.” He added that deposit tokens are a superior alternative to stablecoins for institutions due to their fractional banking-based scalability. The token will initially be permissioned and available exclusively to approved institutional clients, with possible expansion to other currencies and broader access subject to regulatory approval.
Strategic Context
The pilot builds on JPMorgan's existing Kinexys Digital Payments platform, formerly JPM Coin, which already facilitates over $2 billion in daily corporate transactions. The launch comes amid a regulatory environment increasingly open to blockchain innovation during President Donald Trump’s second administration. By partnering with Coinbase and Base, JPMorgan aims to offer institutions a compliant and efficient alternative to stablecoins while benefiting from Base's low-cost, high-speed infrastructure. As Base noted: “Commercial banking is coming onchain.” This development signals a major step toward mainstream institutional adoption of public blockchains for real-world asset tokenization.
