Jupiter, a Solana-based decentralized trading aggregator, successfully launched its native token JUP on January 31, executing one of the largest airdrops in cryptocurrency history. Approximately $700 million worth of JUP tokens were distributed to nearly one million wallet holders.
Record-Breaking Airdrop Details
The airdrop constituted 10% of the total supply, amounting to 1 billion JUP tokens. According to a forum post by Jupiter’s pseudonymous founder, weremeow, the initial circulating supply was set at 1.35 billion tokens, down from an earlier projection of 1.7 billion. The total supply stands at 10 billion JUP, split evenly between team and community wallets.
The retrospective airdrop targeted users who interacted with the Jupiter platform before November 2, 2023, making 955,000 wallets eligible. Within the first hour, over 20% of the allocated 1 billion JUP had been claimed, reflecting strong community engagement.
Token Allocation Adjustments
Beyond the airdrop, the allocation included 250 million JUP for a launch pool (reduced from 500 million), 50 million each for loans to market makers on centralized exchanges and immediate liquidity pool needs, and 33 million as a buffer for contingencies. These adjustments were made to mitigate potential selling pressure and ensure a smooth market debut.
Market Performance and Exchange Listings
JUP opened at $0.41 and quickly reached $0.72, pushing its fully diluted market capitalization above $6 billion. Major centralized exchanges including Bybit, Binance, Bitfinex, and OKX had listed JUP in anticipation of the launch, with initial trading aligned to the liquidity pool’s price curve at approximately $0.40. The token’s strong price performance highlighted robust demand from both retail and institutional participants.
Solana Network Resilience
Despite the massive influx of transaction activity, the Solana blockchain maintained stability throughout the airdrop. Claims and trades on decentralized exchanges were processed with minimal issues. However, some RPC nodes experienced temporary challenges during the first 30 minutes, slightly affecting user experience for a subset of participants. Jupiter collaborated closely with the Solana Foundation to quickly resolve these bottlenecks. The successful launch reinforces confidence in Solana’s scalability and reliability under high demand conditions.
