Justin Sun publicly accuses WLFI of opaque governance, claiming $75 million of his investment is frozen and 76% of voting power is held by 10 wallets. WLFI counters with legal threats as its token drops to a new low of $0.07.

Justin Sun and the Trump family's DeFi project World Liberty Financial (WLFI) have entered open conflict. Sun, claiming to be an early investor who poured roughly $75 million into the project, now accuses WLFI of freezing his assets via opaque governance votes and reveals that 76% of voting power is concentrated in just 10 wallets. WLFI hit back, calling Sun a habitual victim-player and threatening legal action.

76% Voting Power, 10 Wallets: Sun Alleges Governance Black Box

The flashpoint was a governance proposal in March regarding token lockup periods. In a Sunday X post, Sun stated that over 76% of the votes came from 10 wallets, key information was deliberately withheld, and meaningful participation was restricted — the outcome predetermined. He wrote: "The governance vote used to endorse these actions was not conducted through a fair or transparent process. Voters were deprived of critical information, substantive participation was suppressed, and the outcome was pre-decided."

Sun further alleged that WLFI retains a "backdoor freeze" function, capable of locking specific addresses at the smart contract level — a direct contradiction to DeFi's core tenets of decentralization and censorship resistance. He described WLFI as "treating the crypto community as an ATM," calling its actions "unfair and never authorized by any fair, transparent, good-faith community governance process."

$75M Invested, Locked and Frozen: Sun's Loss List

According to on-chain data and media reports, Sun began buying WLFI tokens in late 2024, with a total investment estimated at $75 million. The current market value has shrunk to roughly $43.45 million, leaving him with a paper loss of over 30%. In September 2025, after WLFI tokens became tradable, Sun attempted to transfer out about $9 million worth of tokens but was flagged as risky and had his wallet frozen via smart contract. That move turned Sun from a supporter into one of the project's loudest critics, raising broad questions about the authenticity of "decentralized governance."

WLFI Fires Back: 'Victim Card,' Threatens Lawsuit

WLFI did not back down. In an official statement, the project said: "Justin's favorite trick is playing the victim while using baseless allegations to cover up his own misconduct." WLFI explicitly warned it would take legal action against Sun's claims.

The controversy also spread to another front: WLFI was revealed to be using its own governance token as collateral to borrow stablecoins on the DeFi lending platform Dolomite. One of Dolomite's co-founders is Corey Caplan, WLFI's CTO — a relationship that amplified concerns over conflicts of interest. WLFI responded that it acts as an "anchor borrower," generating revenue for the platform and creating value for token holders. However, the explanation did little to calm markets: WLFI's token fell to an all-time low of $0.07 on Saturday after the news broke.

The Irony of Decentralization: Governance or Performance?

The deeper significance of this clash extends beyond personal animosity between Sun and the Trump family. WLFI attracted investors under the banner of "decentralized finance," yet at a critical moment it revealed a highly concentrated voting structure, a freeze-capable smart contract mechanism, and lending arrangements potentially steered by affiliated parties — three factors that make the word "decentralized" ring hollow. When 76% of governance votes come from 10 wallets, and tokens can be frozen unilaterally by the platform, whose interests does "community governance" truly protect? Sun's experience may be an extreme case, but the centralized risks it exposes are a lesson every DeFi investor should take to heart.
