Justin Sun, founder of the Tron blockchain, announced on April 15, 2026 that the network will launch a post-quantum (PQC) upgrade initiative, aiming to integrate cryptographic signatures standardized by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) directly into its mainnet. The announcement positions Tron as the first major public blockchain to aggressively pursue quantum-resistant cryptography, while Bitcoin and Ethereum remain in research and debate phases.

In a post on X, Sun wrote: "While Bitcoin debates whether to freeze vulnerable coins and Ethereum forms research committees, Tron is building." He stated that a detailed technical roadmap will follow. The upgrade centers on three algorithms finalized by NIST in August 2024: ML-DSA, FN-DSA and SLH-DSA. These are designed to withstand attacks from large-scale quantum computers running algorithms like Shor's, which can break current elliptic curve digital signature algorithms (ECDSA) used by most blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Technical Trade-offs and Industry Comparisons
The shift comes with significant technical challenges. Post-quantum signatures are approximately 10 times larger than ECDSA signatures, which could reduce transaction throughput, increase storage requirements, and strain network efficiency on high-volume chains like Tron, which processes billions of dollars in stablecoin transfers (including USDT) daily. The need to balance security with performance is critical. As of now, no formal governance proposal or technical documentation has been released by Tron DAO, leaving the market in wait. Meanwhile, Bitcoin proponents have shown little interest in proposals to freeze vulnerable coins, and Ethereum continues to explore migration strategies through research committees.
