Bitcoin investors hoping for a quick recovery may need to adjust their expectations. Katie Stockton, founder and managing partner of Fairlead Strategies, appeared on CNBC's Squawk Box this week with a measured take: Bitcoin will likely retest the $58,000-to-$59,000 support zone multiple times before any durable upside can take hold.
Bitcoin's 'Boring' Basing Phase
Stockton described the current price action as a prolonged basing phase, with support firmly in the $58k-$59k range. She expects more than one retest of that level. "It's a cyclical downtrend and that's the dominant feature on the chart right now," she said. "I think we can assume there are going to be retests of support, maybe more than one." For traders watching for a bottom, she pointed out that charts show no oversold upturns, no breadth extremes, and no sentiment readings that would typically confirm a durable low. Her advice was clear: do not chase brief relief rallies and wait for the weight of evidence before adding exposure aggressively. At press time, Bitcoin is trading near $70,000, up more than 3% in the last 24 hours — yet Stockton's warning implies prices could head back toward lower levels.
Macro Headwinds Pressure Risk Assets
Bitcoin does not move in a vacuum. Stockton's broader market outlook adds crucial context for crypto traders. She views the S&P 500's roughly 4% recovery last week from recent lows as unsustainable. For risk assets including crypto, a continued equity correction and widening credit spreads create an unfavorable backdrop. Even a ceasefire in the Strait of Hormuz, Stockton argued, may not be enough to fully reverse the damage already building in financial markets. "I think it needs to be more than just reopening the Strait to fix the market at this point," she said. This macro perspective reinforces her view on Bitcoin: in an environment of tightening liquidity and declining risk appetite, a stronger fundamental catalyst — not just short-term geopolitical relief — is required for Bitcoin to break out of its basing range.
