NBA superstar Kevin Durant has finally regained access to his Coinbase account after being locked out for years, according to Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong. In a post on X on September 18, 2025, Armstrong confirmed: “We got this fixed. Account recovery complete.”

From Warriors Locker Room to Crypto Fortune

Durant originally purchased Bitcoin on Coinbase in 2016 after learning about the cryptocurrency from his Golden State Warriors teammates. At the time, Bitcoin traded between $360 and $1,000. Today, it is near $116,000, representing a staggering return. Neither Durant nor his agent Rich Kleiman disclosed the exact amount held, though both are investors in Coinbase via their business platform Boardroom.

Speaking at CNBC’s Game Plan conference in Los Angeles, Kleiman described the prolonged struggle: “It’s just a process we haven’t been able to figure out. But, Bitcoin keeps going up … so, I mean, it’s only benefited us.” The recovery of Durant’s account highlights the explosive growth of Bitcoin since the early days of adoption.

Coinbase’s Customer Service Turnaround

Armstrong used the high-profile case to shine a light on Coinbase’s broader customer support initiatives. He emphasized: “We’re putting a big focus on getting better at customer support at both ends – improving products so fewer people need support, and providing a faster, higher quality experience when you do.” Wes Griffith, who leads Coinbase customer support teams, addressed concerns on X: “We know customer support at Coinbase has been criticized. We hear you, we are consistently improving and want to bring you along the way.” Griffith detailed steps including addressing product issues earlier, boosting automation with APIs and AI tools, cutting down chatbot barriers, and strengthening live support. He shared: “In August, our Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) hit an all-time high – up +20% over the last 2 months. A good step forward, but we’ve got plenty more to do.”

The reversal of Durant’s account lockout serves as a powerful symbol of both the immense wealth generated by early Bitcoin adoption and Coinbase's renewed commitment to user experience in the competitive crypto exchange landscape.
