NBA superstar Kevin Durant has successfully recovered his long-lost Bitcoin stash after being locked out of his Coinbase account for years, marking a high-profile win for both the athlete and the exchange's revamped customer support.
A Bitcoin Journey Frozen in Time
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong confirmed the account restoration on social media platform X on September 18, 2025, stating simply: “We got this fixed. Account recovery complete.” Durant originally purchased Bitcoin through Coinbase in 2016, inspired by his Golden State Warriors teammates’ early crypto enthusiasm. At the time, Bitcoin traded between $360 and $1,000. Fast forward to September 2025, the cryptocurrency was trading near $116,000—a staggering 115x increase from its lower bound.
Durant and his agent Rich Kleiman detailed the prolonged struggle at CNBC’s Game Plan conference in Los Angeles. Kleiman described the issue as “a process we haven’t been able to figure out,” but noted the silver lining: “Bitcoin keeps going up … so, I mean, it’s only benefited us.” Neither Durant nor Kleiman disclosed the exact amount of Bitcoin held, though both are investors in Coinbase through their platform Boardroom.
From Crisis to Customer Service Showcase
Armstrong seized the opportunity to highlight Coinbase’s broader customer support initiatives. “We’re putting a big focus on getting better at customer support at both ends – improving products so fewer people need support, and providing a faster, higher quality experience when you do,” he wrote. The CEO acknowledged past criticisms of Coinbase’s support system, which had frustrated many users over the years.
Wes Griffith, who leads Coinbase’s customer support teams, elaborated on the improvements on X. He outlined concrete steps: earlier product issue resolution, increased automation using APIs and AI tools, reduced chatbot friction, and strengthened live support. “In August, our Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) hit an all-time high – up +20% over the last 2 months. A good step forward, but we’ve got plenty more to do,” Griffith shared.
Durant’s recovery serves as both a cautionary tale about early crypto custody risks and a testament to the enormous long-term gains possible in digital assets. For Coinbase, the incident provides a powerful narrative of improvement—turning a high-profile failure into a proof point of its commitment to user experience. As the crypto industry matures, the reliability of exchanges in securing and returning assets will remain a critical differentiator.
