NBA superstar Kevin Durant has finally regained access to his long-lost Bitcoin stash on Coinbase, after years of being locked out of his account. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced on X on Sept. 18, 2025: “We got this fixed. Account recovery complete.” The high-profile case not only returned Durant's digital assets but also cast a renewed spotlight on the exchange's ongoing efforts to overhaul its customer service.
From Warriors Teammates to Bitcoin Early Adopter
Durant originally purchased Bitcoin on Coinbase in 2016 after learning about the cryptocurrency from his Golden State Warriors teammates. At the time, Bitcoin traded between $360 and $1,000; as of Thursday, it is near $116,000. Neither Durant nor his agent Rich Kleiman disclosed the amount of his holdings, though both have invested in Coinbase through their business platform Boardroom. Speaking at CNBC's Game Plan conference, Kleiman noted: “It's just a process we haven't been able to figure out. But, Bitcoin keeps going up … so, I mean, it's only benefited us.”
Coinbase Revamps Customer Support
Armstrong used the celebrity case to highlight broader customer support improvements at Coinbase. He emphasized: “We're putting a big focus on getting better at customer support at both ends – improving products so fewer people need support, and providing a faster, higher quality experience when you do.” Wes Griffith, who leads Coinbase's customer support teams, detailed steps the exchange is taking: addressing product issues earlier, boosting automation with APIs and AI tools, cutting down chatbot barriers, and strengthening live support. “In August, our Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) hit an all-time high – up 20% over the last 2 months. A good step forward, but we've got plenty more to do,” he shared on X.
Bitcoin's Meteoric Rise and the Value of Patience
Durant's ordeal also underscores Bitcoin's explosive growth over the past nine years. From a few hundred dollars in 2016 to nearly six figures today, early adopters who held through technical difficulties have seen their assets multiply exponentially. While Coinbase has long been criticized for its customer support, the company's public commitment to systemic improvements—as demonstrated by the CEO personally resolving a star athlete's case—could signal better experiences ahead for everyday users.
As of press time, Bitcoin continues to trade around $116,000, reflecting the broader cryptocurrency market's maturation. Durant's story is more than a celebrity anecdote; it's a unique lens on exchange evolution and Bitcoin's enduring value proposition.
