Kevin O'Leary, the renowned investor from ABC's Shark Tank and chairman of O'Shares ETFs, recently shared his insights on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in an interview with Bitcoin Magazine. Known for his sharp business acumen, O'Leary declared that crypto is a 'wonderful universe' and a 'fantastic asset' that every investor should consider adding to their portfolio.
From 3% to 10%: O'Leary's Growing Crypto Allocation
O'Leary revealed that his cryptocurrency exposure has expanded significantly over the past year. At the start of the year, crypto represented only 3% of his investment portfolio. He initially aimed to reach 7% by year-end, but the appreciation of his holdings has pushed that figure to nearly 10%. 'Because of the appreciation of so many of the assets I have now, we're almost at 10% today,' he said.
His portfolio is diversified beyond Bitcoin, including positions in Ethereum, USD Coin, and various companies building decentralized wallet infrastructure. Notably, O'Leary admitted to owning 'a lot of Ethereum' and purchased his first cryptocurrency back in 2017. In October, he disclosed that his crypto exposure had surpassed his gold allocation for the first time. Earlier in September, he predicted that 'trillions of dollars' would eventually flow into BTC.
Advice for New Crypto Investors
When asked how beginners should approach Bitcoin and crypto, O'Leary emphasized a hands-on, educational approach. 'I really advise them to explore this asset and the way to do it is to start small,' he said. He recommends trying different platforms and wallet types to understand the ecosystem firsthand. 'Are you going to buy it through a centralized wallet? Are you going to decentralize? Try all the options, learn by experience.'
O'Leary stressed that education is the key to success in the crypto space. 'It's a must-own if you're an investor, and then it's about how you do it. But it's all about education,' he stated. He highlighted the wealth of online resources available through the crypto community, noting that just three or four hours of study can make a novice 'quite knowledgeable on what Bitcoin is, how it works, and how to own it.'
Lessons from the Next Generation
O'Leary shared a personal example of how the younger generation adapts to digital assets. His 25-year-old son has become fully proficient in all aspects of Bitcoin ownership and trading, including staking. 'He is the next generation. He did it on his own. He's never been in a bank branch. He never goes into a bank, doesn't know why he would,' O'Leary recounted. This anecdote illustrates the shift in financial behavior among Gen Z and millennials, who are embracing crypto-native solutions over traditional banking.
While acknowledging that mistakes happen—such as losing coins due to inexperience—O'Leary noted that these errors tend to occur on a small scale when learning, and investors rarely repeat them. 'They create awareness of how to do it,' he said. With his portfolio now heavily weighted toward crypto, Mr. Wonderful continues to advocate for the asset class as a core component of modern investing.
