Kraken’s banking unit has secured a Federal Reserve master account, making it the first U.S. crypto bank with direct access to the central bank’s payment infrastructure. The approval gives Kraken Financial a straight connection to systems such as Fedwire, cutting out intermediaries in institutional fiat transfers and setting up a staged rollout that starts with institutional activity.
The shift matters at the payments layer. Crypto firms have typically relied on partner banks to move dollars through the U.S. financial system, adding extra steps, delays, and operational friction. With direct access, Kraken Financial can handle transfers through a shorter chain. The account was approved for an initial one-year term, and the related services are expected to launch gradually.
Institutional transfers are the first use case
Kraken Financial is the Wyoming-chartered bank arm of the exchange, operating under its legal parent, Payward. Arjun Sethi, co-CEO of Payward and Kraken, said the development reflects a convergence between crypto infrastructure and sovereign financial rails. In his description, the Federal Reserve master account allows the company to function not as a peripheral participant in U.S. banking, but as a directly connected financial institution.
For institutional clients, the practical effect is clear: faster money movement, fewer handoffs, and lower operational complexity. The source material also states that Kraken raised $20 billion in its November financing and continues to invest in expanding its user base and asset offerings.
Crypto firms are moving deeper into banking channels
Kraken’s approval fits a wider push by crypto companies into regulated banking structures. Circle, Ripple, Paxos, Bridge, which is owned by Stripe, and Crypto.com have received conditional national trust bank charters. Those approvals allow them to offer regulated digital-asset custody, staking, and trade settlement services.
Coinbase and stablecoin provider World Liberty Financial have also submitted similar applications. The report adds that World Liberty Financial is under investigation over ties to President Donald Trump’s family. Taken together, these efforts point to growing acceptance of crypto firms inside mainstream financial systems rather than outside them.
Fed messaging stays focused on system stability
The Federal Reserve’s stance in the report is not framed around speed alone. Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid said the integrity and stability of the U.S. payments system remain the priority throughout this transition.
That leaves Kraken’s access carrying two messages at once: digital-asset firms are gaining entry to core payment rails, and that entry is being handled under close oversight. Based on the current disclosure, the first phase is limited to institutional clients and will be introduced step by step.
